How to build a web site for free

In just moment I will show you some FREE online web site building resources so you can build a free web site. However just before I do, I want to tell you a little bit about my own site web build experience.

The reason I struggled  to build a free website was because many of the free web building software programs are too hard to use. Some of them are very easy but they offer no benefits such as Search Engine optimization or flexibilty to add basic scripts.

Host Style Free Web Builders

These online web site products are often provided by web host companies for free. They allow you to create simple pages using a WYSIWYG editor. This is how I started. The pages are slow and clunky. The main problem is that the pages do not interconnect and you need to do that manually.

Also if you are trying to build a free web site of your own using this style of tool it will take forever. The requirement for you to hand edit pages is still there because the code the WYSIWYG generates will be bloated and error ridden.

The other style of free host web site builder software is the very basic "type in a box" style of application. These are simple and easy to use. (Example is TSE Media.com) and they look ok. The problem is they have very clunky page code, and no Search Optimization benefits. This means no one is likely to find your pages since the search engines generally don't index pages without proper page tiltes and page data.

Free Desktop application for building a web site of your own

You can download software like NVU or FirstPage to your computer. The chances are you will struggle to figure out how to work these programs. They make nice code, and they can do powerful things like tables and tags, however they are hard to use.

I find them hard to use because you have to "ftp" the sites after you build them using ftp software (like core lite).

You can use templates from free websites in these programs but you have to edit them and get them ready for upload. This requires typing over text and adding your personal touches.

When you have the site built you still have to manually ad page titles, meta tags and hyperlinks to other websites as required. These tasks are all time consuming.

Blogs are great for free website building

Blogs are a great way to create a free website for yourself. I use blogs all the time. You can get them at blogger.com and wordpress.com. If you have your own domain name and web hosting you can install either Blogger or wrodpress blogs to your own site for free.

The advantage of blogs (other than being free) is they have easy to use content management, and they are very dynamic. They are gtreat for ever changing content and the ability to have comments. They also provide social bookmarking options because they broadcast an RSS feed.

The downside of Blogs is they require constant updating. They are a little more complex to use than some web software when you put them on your own server (if you use wordpress) because you need to be able to set up mySQL database functions and change CHMOD permissions.

Advanced Wordpress Blogs are not for first timers. Blogger is the easiest of blogs to use but you have no control. If google decide to remove your blog you have lost it for good.

The perfect solution?

Free software for building your own web site free can be great, however I encourage you to look at some paid solutions. In my case (and many others) I have had great success using XSitePro.
